With the Central Business District (CBD) in Mriehel fast becoming one of Malta’s premier bustling hot spots for commercial activity, Malta Public Transport is widening its offering of public transport service to and from the area. As of 10th October 2022, Malta Public Transport will be serving the area with improved frequency on public transport routes, a wider service area for the Tallinja On Demand and the new Park and Ride in collaboration with the Central Business District.
Following the national launch of the free public transport scheme, passengers with a valid Tallinja Card can travel for free on the four bus routes connecting CBD directly to Qormi, Hamrun, Floriana, Valletta, Imtarfa, Dingli, Rabat, Attard and Santa Venera.
The following bus routes all feature stops in CBD, with Route 64 connecting to Qormi, Hamrun, Floriana and Valletta with an increased frequency of every 30 minutes on weekdays.
Routes 50, 51, 52, and 53 connecting CBD to Dingli, Imtarfa, Rabat, Attard, Santa Venera, Hamrun, Floriana and Valletta will continue to operate at a frequency of every 30 minutes in the direction towards Valletta. However, due to the extensive roadworks in the area that have extended the bus travel time considerably, Routes 51 and 52 will be diverted via the Mriehel Bypass, while Routes 50 and 53 will continue to serve CBD through Notabile Road.
Route 110 will continue to offer an hourly connection to Pembroke, Swieqi, St Julian’s, Sliema, Gzira, Kappara, Ta’ Giorni, San Gwann, Mater Dei Hospital, Swatar, B’kara, Fleur de Lys, Qormi and Marsa Park & Ride.
Malta Public Transport also provides the Tallinja On Demand service, where customers can book a seat on one of the premium buses using Tallinja App by choosing where and when to be picked up and dropped off. The system identifies the best ride available and shows the customers trip details. This effectively means that customers can book a trip between bus stops without worrying about whether there is space on the bus. The system also sends notifications to alert the passengers that the bus is on its way. The Tallinja On-Demand service is currently offered in the following localities: Mriehel, Balzan, B’kara, Swatar, Mater Dei Hospital, Msida, Ta’ Xbiex, Gzira, Sliema, St Julian’s, Pembroke, Swieqi and San Gwann. The fare for Tallinja On-Demand service is €2.50 per trip, with a charge of €1 per additional passengers to encourage group travelling.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the Central Business District (Mriehel), Malta Public Transport will also be operating a new Park & Ride service. This service will be available to both employees working in the area, as well as customers visiting various business in the same area. The Park & Ride service includes a parking space of 250 car spaces opposite the Homemate outlet and a shuttle service bus will operate every 20 minutes during peak hours (7:00hrs – 10:00hrs and 16:00hrs and 19:00hrs) between Monday and Friday. The shuttle bus will service multiple bus stops across the Mriehel area.
