A journey through the ages
The uphill road in Xemxija presents a crossroads: follow the smooth lanes around the new buildings or step into the uneven path of history. Originally opened more than 2000 years ago, during the Roman period, the Xemxija Heritage Trail takes explorers back through time visiting ancient settlements dating back to the Neolithic.
Scattered along the ‘Old Roman Road’, as it is more commonly known, are fascinating natural and human-made features. One of the main attractions brings together the best of nature’s genius and human craft – the Roman Apiary. Built out of a cave, this structure was used as a shelter in World War II but has now been restored to its charming state.
Another wonderful inhabitant of the area is the millennial carob tree, probably the oldest tree in Malta. Branching out majestically over Xemxija Bay, its trunk has grown to a width of over seven metres.
Further on, a lonely menhir rock stands imposingly, marking the location of a probable bronze age temple. The rest of the construction was likely taken away to a new life in other structures in the historical zone.
The trail includes more than 20 sights of archaeological, natural, or cultural significance. From burial caves to pillboxes to granaries and a traditional rustic farmhouse, there is something to ignite your imagination every few steps.
