Tallinja Card - Malta Public Transport

About tallinja card

Your personalised transport card

The tallinja card is an intelligent contactless bus card designed to make it easy for you to use the bus. The card is personalised with your photo and name and can be topped up with credit easily online, over the phone, at any of our sales outlets or at any MaltaPost post office. This card can be used to travel on all the buses in Malta and Gozo. Your credit will not expire.

When using your tallinja card you will benefit from cheaper fares than when you pay on the bus. Every time you board the bus simply touch the reader on the bus with your tallinja card. A fare for every journey will be deducted automatically from your available credit. It’s that easy and much quicker!

Different cards and fares are available for Children, Students, Adults, Kartanzjan Holders, Holders of EU Disability Card with “MT” mark or Special ID Card issued by the Commissions for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Gozo Residents. This card cannot be shared.

The bus driver and inspector will reserve the right to ask you to show your tallinja card so that the photo and name can be verified. A penalty of €50 will apply if someone uses a card of someone else.

Registering for your tallinja card

Registering for your tallinja card is simple, and can be done in one of two ways. You will be required to provide your email and/or mobile phone number which will be used for us to communicate with you.

Follow the instructions to make sure your application is processed in an efficient manner, without any delays. We aim to deliver the card within two weeks of registration.

  • Online: Click here and simply follow the instructions and fill in the required fields. Some fields are mandatory and need to be populated.

If you are a Maltese e-ID cardholder and choose to give us your e-ID Card document number, we will be able to take the photo from the National Identity Database Management System or the Car Licensing Database. This will facilitate the processing of your card, and make the process a swifter one.

If you are a holder of any other identity document, you will be asked to upload a photo and a copy of your document.

A registration fee of €10 applies for all cards, together with registered postage charges and a minimum top-up amount of €20 to activate the card (reduced to €10 in the case of Child and Concession Cards). This amount of top-up credit will be able to be used immediately upon receiving the card. Your credit will not expire.
  • At one of our Sales and Information Offices: You can download a form here. Please fill in the application form and provide all documents as listed on the reverse side of the application form and return the filled application to any Sales and Information Offices. You will also be given a receipt when you hand in the application.

It is important that the instructions on the application form are read and adhered to.

How to use the tallinja card

Upon receiving your tallinja card, you can top it up with additional credit for trips on our bus service. This can be done using the following options:

  • By accessing the top-up page and paying by Credit/Debit Card or top-up voucher
  • By buying a top-up voucher from one of the various outlets and topping up using your phone
  • By visiting any MaltaPost post office and topping up in cash
  • By visiting any of our outlets and topping up in cash or Credit/Debit card

When topping up, make sure you enter the correct customer number. If an error is made and a customer number other than yours is used, we are not liable to refund any funds.

When boarding a bus, keep your tallinja card handy, and tap it on the reader next to the driver. When doing so, make sure you get a green light on the reader together with a chime. This means that the card has been validated and accepted, and you can then proceed towards the back of the bus to take a seat.

Red light and a different chime means the card has not been accepted or validated, and that you would need to purchase a ticket to be allowed to board the bus. Failure to validate the card or have a valid ticket may result in you incurring a penalty.

When you validate your card, the fare deducted from your credit depends on a number of factors, the main one being the type of card you have, Adult, Concession, Student or any other. The capping is calculated for usage on day services. Night Service bus fares are also reduced from your credit but do not contribute towards the capping.

Capping is a feature that will allow you not to spend more than a specific amount for a specific time period. Different capping levels exist for different types of cards. When the capping amount is reached for a specific time period according to the card type, your credit is no longer deducted when validating the tallinja card.

More detailed information on capping can be found here.
