About the Personalised tallinja card

The personalised tallinja card offers a smart solution for easy bus travel across Malta. Free Government Travel Scheme.

The card offers:

Free Travel: With a personalised tallinja Card, you can travel for free on Day Routes, Night Routes and select Special Services. You can also travel for free on the ferry connecting Sliema, Valletta and The Three Cities, and on the Barrakka Lift.
Easy, No-Expiry Top Ups: You can add credit to your card via the free tallinja App, online, or at any sales outlet, and your credit never expires.
Direct Route Fares: While most routes are free, tallinja Direct (TD) Routes are not included in the Government’s free transport scheme, and a fare will be deducted when you tap your card on these routes.

How to Get Your tallinja card

Registering for a tallinja card is quick and easy, and the process can be completed online. Simply provide your email address and mobile number for communication. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully to prevent any delays. Cards are typically delivered within two weeks.

Click here to register, fill in the required fields, and provide a photo. If you have a Maltese e-ID, we can use your photo from the National Identity Database for faster processing. Other identity document holders will need to upload a photo and a copy of their document.

You can also register at MaltaPost Post Office by completing a paper form and submitting all the required documentation. In this case, an admin fee applies.

Registration fees are €25 for Student, Adult and Gozo cards, and €5 for Child and Concession cards. Postage charges apply.

Using Your tallinja card

Once you receive your tallinja card, you can top it up online via the tallinja app, or at any Sales Office.

When boarding a bus, tap your tallinja card on the ticketing machine near the driver. A green light and chime indicate successful validation. A red light means the card was not accepted, and you will need to purchase a ticket in cash or with your contactless bank card or smartphone. Failure to validate your card or have a valid ticket will result in a €50 penalty and the confiscation of your tallinja card until the fine is paid.

Additional Services

The tallinja card also offers free travel on the Valletta Ferry Services connecting Valletta to The Three Cities and Sliema, and access to the Barrakka Lift. tallinja Bike services are available for a fare, depending on the card used.

Each tallinja card is designed to cater to specific needs and eligibility criteria, ensuring convenient travel solutions across Malta and Gozo.

Child tallinja card

Designed for children aged 4-10, the child tallinja card allows young travellers to enjoy convenient and free bus travel across Malta.

Children under 4 years of age travel for free and do not require a tallinja card.

Parents or legal guardians must provide their consent for the application.

Student tallinja card

Available for customers aged 11-16 or aged 17-59 attending a full-time educational course approved by Malta’s Ministry of Education, lasting more than 3 months.

Applicants must provide proof of their student status, such as a valid student ID or course registration, a photo and parental consent in the case of minors.

Adult tallinja card

Customers aged 17 and over, and not falling into any other category, are eligible for the Adult tallinja card. This card offers straightforward bus travel solutions across Malta with ease of use and benefits.

Gozo Resident tallinja card

Specifically for customers residing in Gozo, this card is linked to their primary place of residence on the island.

Concession tallinja card

Available to (i) holders of the ‘Kartanzjan’ or Maltese 60+ Identity Card residing in Malta and (ii) individuals with mobility impairments holding an EU Disability Card with an “MT” mark or a Special ID Card issued by CRPD (Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability).
